History
This page is an attempt to capture some of the history of Ohio LinuxFest. Several of those who were involved early have moved on, so the institutional memory is dwindling. Putting things down in print here will help keep us from forgetting!

The inaugural Ohio LinuxFest, this was created as a gathering of Ohio Linux User Groups (LUGs). The InterLUG mailing list served as a coordination tool. The event was held at Ohio State University's Dreese Lab from 11:00am to 5:00pm on Saturday, October 4.
According to the web site, five presentations were given:
- John Ackermann on Open Source Licensing
- Scott Collins on the Mozilla Project
- David J. Coulson on User-Mode Linux
- Scott Courtney on Linux on IBM Mainframes
- Jim McQuillan on the Linux Terminal Server Project
2004
The 2004 event was originally planned to be held at the Ohio State University for a second year. However, room reservations were not obtained, and organizers had to scramble to get meeting rooms at the Hyatt Regency Columbus next to the convention center. This was made possible by Jon 'maddog' Hall, Executive Director of Linux International, who personally fronted the funds needed to secure the meeting space.
Taking place Saturday, October 2 from 10:00am until 6:00pm, two adjoining rooms were used, comprising two separate tracks. The opening keynote and closing were delivered to both rooms by removing the airwall separating them. Presentations included:
- Linux: Millennium Momentum (opening keynote) by Paul Ferris, KeyCorp
- Apache Performance by Rich Bowen, Apache Software Foundation
- Theory and Practice: SELinux on Fedora by Colin Walters, Red Hat, Inc.
- Open Source Diversity by Deryck Hodge, the Samba Team
- The Future of the Linux Desktop by Dan Rusek, Novell, Inc.
- Benchmarking and Tuning the GROMACS Molecular Dynamics Package on Beowulf Clusters by Charles Peck, Josh Hursey, Josh McCoy, Earlham College, Indiana University
- Asterisk and Linux: VoIP for the Masses by Greg Boehnlein, N2Net
- Introduction to SUSE LINUX Server the Universal Operating System by Mark Richards, Novell, Inc.
- Using Open Source Tools to Solve Big Problems: Email by Bill Moran, Potential Technologies
- Migrating to Apache 2.0 by Rich Bowen, Apache Software Foundation
- Managing Linux with Red Carpet by Brian Maseck, Novell, Inc.
As a sidenote, George W. Bush was giving a speech for the presidential campaign that year to a group in the Greater Columbus Convention Center next door. Many security personnel and signs prohibiting backpacks and bags were posted around. Fortunately, being outside the convention center proper, the assembled horde of geeks with their laptop bags didn't present a problem.
